OSCAR MIC - Ask 6

HOW DID YOUR NAME ORIGINATE?

Oscar Mike is a US Marine term for 'on the move'. I kept hearing characters shouting "we're Oscar Mike!" On the David Simon series Generation Kill and thought it would be a great name for a rapper. When I started looping, which began with the track Loop Hop, which is made from vocal loops, I changed the Mike to Mic, for microphone and here we are

WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST GIG AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE THERE?

I played at a fashion show at Dark Sugars Cocoa House on Brick Lane. There were about 70 people there.

-

WHEN WAS YOUR LAST DAY OFF AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH IT?

Today! I'm about to meet my mum at the Royal Academy then go to Denmark Street to take a £50 second hand Squire in to be upgraded into half decent gigging guitar. It won't be a disaster if anyone steals it.

WHAT IS SOMETHING – APART FROM YOUR PHONE OR WALLET – THAT HAS TO BE IN YOUR VICINITY AT ALL TIMES?

Not much but I do like to wear hats. Flat caps and fedoras.

WHICH SONG BY ANOTHER ARTIST DO YOU WISH YOU’D WRITTEN?

Odorono by The Who. The greatest pop some of all time. It's a heart breaking love song about a woman trying to make it in the music business. It has an amazing twist at the end (spoiler alert) when you realise the whole song is an advert for a deodorant. It's genius. It plays with your heart strings but it's just trying to sell you a product.

WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST SURREAL FAN MOMENT?

I was playing at Secret Garden Party at the Where The Wild Things Are stage. It was 4.30pm and pouring with rain and there were only about 10 people watching. In the distance was a a mound and during the 3rd song a big group of people came over the mound. I could see by their body language that they were excited and liked what they were hearing and they all came up and watched the rest of my set. One woman was wearing a yellow Mac and sunglasses, like in my promo shot and I said into the mic "first prize goes to the guy in the yellow mac". A few people got in touch after that gig and one was a guy who said "you made day when you referred to my sister as a guy!". He had since come to loads of gigs and we've become friends
