EP of the Week: Benin City - What A Time

‘Faithless 2.0’ is the stomping and infectious new track from London-based dance pop trio Benin City, taken from their EP ‘What A Time’. A band comprised of vocalists Joshua Idehen and Shanaz Dorsett and multi-instrumentalist Tom Leaper, the beat-driven ‘Faithless 2.0’ is a dancefloor ready banger with captivating lyricism. Speaking on the track Josh said: “Faithless was about my neighbours when I lived with my mum in a council estate. He had mental problems, maybe from drug abuse. One night he was arguing with himself and I could hear him through the wall.”

Benin City are a band that reflect the diversity of London, and use their music as an exploration of social and political issues. Their second album tackled the notion of the depleting London club scene due to the closure of significant underground club venues and this EP tackle other interesting themes head on. Both a celebration and interrogation of what it is to be a Londoner, their often-stark lyrics are complemented by upbeat and dance friendly production, creating a truly unique prospect.

Recording and performing with the likes of Sons of Kemet, Portugal. The Man and Comet Is Coming, Benin City have cemented their status as a dynamic and versatile trio. With further live shows and new music expected in 2020, it looks like they’re only getting started.
