DOCTORS OF MADNESS - Ask 6

HOW DID YOUR NAME ORIGINATE?

I was always a big fan of the US writer William Burroughs. In his book Naked Lunch there is a very dubious character called Dr Benway, who is in fact a drug addict. I always liked the irony of doctor having a dark side…Hence Doctors of Madness.

-

WHERE WAS YOUR FIRST GIG AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE THERE?

The 100 Club, London at a student Xmas Party in 1974. It was full but they were expecting a covers band…the only covers I knew were Velvet Underground songs…they hated us.

-

WHEN WAS YOUR LAST DAY OFF AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH IT?

What is a day off? I am an artist- I am ALWAYS working…even when I don’t know it!

-

WHAT IS SOMETHING APART FROM YOUR WALLET OR PHONE THAT HAS TO BE IN YOUR VICINITY AT ALL TIMES?

My guitar

-

WHICH SONG BY ANOTHER ARTIST DO YOU WISH YOU HAD WRITTEN?

Visions Of Johanna by Bob Dylan is pretty good…so is Common People by Pulp.

-

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST SURREAL FAN MOMENT?

Joe Elliott of Def Leppard telling me he was the world’s biggest Doctors of Madness fan, and then singing backing vocals on 5 tracks on our new album!
